My first time (outside of street fairs that charge you $30 for a small butterfly on your arm) getting henna. The girls loved the fact that I got it. A woman at the museum had a little stand. This cost me a little under $5. Two weeks later it's starting to fade away.

Dubai Museum

I took my girls to the Dubai Museum. This was my first trip to downtown Dubai. The museum is housed in a fort. It tells the development of Bedouin society and the UAE. It was really cool. One of the best museums I've ever seen.

Amen!?!? My MRI came back perfect. My blood results on the other hand did not. It's a long story. I'm treatable. I just have to wait a few more weeks for my doctor to return.

The Judah....Da Da Da

The Judah cat has returned!! God is so faithful. I cried a lot over the little babe, but then put it all in God's hands. The more I thought about the situation, the happier I was. I knew and I trusted God to take care of Him. He says He would, and He has!!!
I am so glad I serve a wonderful, trustworthy God!

I'm also very happy to see Judah back at home. He's naughty. :)

Al-Ain Zoo

During our four day break, I rented a car with two ladies from work and drove 2 hours to Al-Ain, which is right on the boarder of Oman. We couldn't go into Oman because it's illegal to take rental cars across the boarder. We enjoyed our day at the zoo. It was very hot!!! The poor animals stayed in the shade. They are smarter than us.

Trusting Him

J. Hudson Taylor once wondered, "How does a person really learn to trust God and hear His voice in 1852, as those in the Bible did?"

The same questions is relevant today as it was in 1852 and every year before and after that. How do I learn to trust God like those in the Bible and afterward?

God says that He supplies all of our needs. He will take care of us. He is our Father and we are His children. He tells us to call on Him and see just what He will do.

I know I need to learn this lesson so desperately. He is my only true need. He is all that I want and nothing more. However, life brings it's little surprises, so to speak. I decided to take God at His word.

I have needed an MRI for sometime now, going from doctor to doctor, with no success. Finally, I found a doctor who applied for a CT scan for me. Ok, well, that's a step closer. Fine. Turns out, the doctor never filed my paperwork with the insurance company. I waited 2 weeks and still no approval because no one could find the paperwork!! I was told to make another appointment (which I would have had to pay for) and see the doctor again. I was also told that because my insurance was expiring soon, that the CT scan would not be approved.

Well, I went to another doctor, who applied for a MRI. Same thing. Insurance was expiring and our school was switching companies...no way. I couldn't even get a full month of medicine under my insurance.

Well, I've been waiting and waiting for this new insurance card from the new company. I would have to make and pay for another appointment with the new doctor, then have the doctor write up the MRI and go back again to have the test. This can not be done without the insurance card.

The person in charge of insurance kept telling me to pay out of my pocket and apply for the money back. I had a MRI in the States of my shoulder and it cost $5,000 USD. I don't have that kind of "pocket change."

From that point on, I knew God was going to have to do something and I needed to trust Him. I prayed and prayed and asked Him to make a way. Saturday night I got a call from the hospital asking when I wanted to come in for the MRI.

I was shocked!!!

How did this happen?!? The old insurance company could not have approved it? Could they? My insurance expired nearly 10 days prior! The new company surely did not approve it because the hospital did not know I have a new company!

A bit of fear flushed over me. Would the hospital expect me to pay out of pocket?!?

On Sunday, I went to see if the insurance card had come in yet. If I have the card, I wouldn't have to pay.

Well, not that it surprised me, but there was no card! The person again told me to pay out of pocket and I told him I did not have that money. He was shocked (although, I told him before) at the price. He gave me a form to get money back if I paid. I clearly stated to him that I would not be paying for it.

Either somehow an insurance company would take care of it now or someone would give me the money to pay.

Well, I walked in and handed them my old insurance card for proof of who I am since I didn't have another card. I had the MRI and walked out. No one asked me for money. No one said the card was expired. Nothing.

I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was God's doing. He is so faithful to His word. If I can trust Him in those small things, then I can trust Him with much larger, more impossible things. I pray that God continues to teach me to trust Him in ever aspect of my life. I pray the same for you.

*As for the MRI, I freaked out. The technician told me to close my eyes. He strapped me in, put a cage over my face and rolled me in the machine. He said, now, open!! I screamed to be let out. It was the most scariest thing in my life. After composing myself, I went back in. This time, I told him I was not going to open my eyes. He was afraid I would go to sleep, which you're not supposed to with a brain scan.

I was not allowed to move. Usually when I'm scared, I pray or sing. I had to do that all in my heart. Everything within me wanted to bust out in prayer aloud.

The scan took almost an hour. I moved once, so that part had to be redone. I was really scared the whole time, but I knew the Lord was right with me. I don't think my heart ever raced so fast in my life before!!

Hopefully, I'll have the results by Thursday.

Church and School

A few pictures from school. I finally went "native." One of my boy's parents sent traditional food to school for Prophet's Day. I ate local style for the first time...with my hands!!! You gather the food in your hands and then squeeze it all together. Then, you use your thumb as a fork. One guess how I felt about this...

As for church, if you look hard, you can see Ray Comfort on the wall. My students (I teach the 12-14 year old class) are learning about Way of the Master. We've finished "Hell's Best Kept Secret," "True and False Conversion," "The Firefighter," and some lessons on how to approach sinners using the Ten Commandments. Next week, they will start to learn how to defend their faith and speak to those of different faiths. The kids are really excited for the upcoming weeks. So am I. I love apologetics.

UAE Doctors

Seven doctors later...My blood vessels are not dilating. I'm not getting enough blood to my brain. That explains my symptoms. I need a MRI soon. Waiting on the approval by the insurance company. My insurance expires this week. Apparently, we are changing companies?!? Who knows. I'm trying not to get stress out about it. Waiting is the most difficult part.

I've been on some medicines for treatment and prevention of the issue at hand. I've been feeling a bit better. I feel like I have a bit more energy. I'm terrible at taking pills. I often forget to take the night pill until late at night. That means, it takes a long time for it to start working...and I stay up late!

But through it all, G-d is faithful! How I would change nothing to see Him glorified. For that, all the suffering and waiting is so worth it. He continues to teach me to trust Him. I am grateful. How I fail at times, yet, He remains the same. I know of no other like Him.

I'm looking forward to the summer. I will be staying with some very dear friends who are family to me. I will be staying in the "country," which means I can relax more. I need it. I will also be going to Repent and Witness again!!! I'm super excited about that. I miss the crew from last year!

Simple Seed and Love

I've been feeling very much like a wilted flower lately. I want to share something encouraging with you, because I know it will encourage me as well.

As most of you know, I had some huge family problems this Christmas break. But that's not the focus of this story. The focus is the faithfulness of my Lord and Savior!

When I was 15, I participated in a Christmas card program for US troops. I sent off a bunch of cards, writing about things I liked and wishing those who received it a very Merry Christmas. Both my parents were in the military, so I understood what it would be like to be away from family during holidays.

Well, I remember getting 2 letters back. One was from a guy who I thought was creepy and the other from a young Air Force guy. Thinking back, he wrote a really nice letter. He talked about how Jesus was the best person in his life. I was taken back by it and never wrote back. I hated God and Jesus at the time. I was into some really nasty stuff.

I remember throwing out the creepy guy's letter, but I kept the other one. In fact, I still have it, 12 years later. I would often read those lines he wrote about Jesus over and over.

I became a Christian 3 months shy of turning 20. I began writing the guy letters to tell him how he planted that seed. After all, it was the first time that I had ever heard about having a relationship with God! Every letter I wrote was eventually returned to me. He had moved on.

I used the phone book and military locators to no success. I gave up. I had been anxious to tell this person what the Lord had done in my life. I had guessed I would just have to wait until I got to heaven.

Again, this Christmas, the person came to mind. This time I tried Facebook and would you believe it? He was on Facebook. I found him and prayed about what to write. I had so much to say! I couldn't wait to tell him about this 12 year old letter. I wondered what his reaction would be.

Praise God his reaction was positive and now we can keep in contact. (He and his wife are going into missions in the next few years).

It's it just amazing what God can do? How he can take a few words that we might seem would have no power and bring to tug a person's heart towards the Father? How much does the Father love us to inspire someone to write someone he (or she) has never met about His Son. I am forever grateful to our Lord for it!

So, with this Valentine's Day, I encourage you to love someone and tell them about God's saving grace! You'll never know what kind of heart your words will seep into. After all, Jesus did not give us the "Great Suggestion..."

A New Hair-do and an Author

UAE National Day!

I temporarily solved my problem with Safari. I haven't been able to upload or attach anything to my blog, emails, etc. I don't know what's wrong with it, so I tried Firefox. It seems to be working. I have a lot of pictures to upload. It will all take time I'm sure.

The UAE celebrated its 37th National Day about 2 weeks ago. Everyone told me how crazy Abu Dhabi would be. Actually, the Puerto Rican Day Parade is crazy. This was nothing. It was so calm (except for the traffic and people spraying silly string at you from their overly decorated cars).

And I am extremely behind in my emails. Sorry, I just can't keep up. Things have been really hectic. We are coming up on an Eid break....2 weeks off!!! Then we go back to school for 5 days and have another 16 days off until Jan 4, 2009!!! I can't wait. I just want to sleep in one day. If I ever cross your mind, please remember to pray for me. Things are good here, really good, but under heavy attack. There have been many times where I feel as if I know what Job went through.

Well, I tried to add some pictures, but it seems as if Safari still doesn't want to work for me.

A few things I've done so far:

Taking Arabic classes (I had my first exam today).
Had a BBQ in the desert.
Rode a 4x4 over sand dunes.
Smashed a cupcake in this guy's face!
Witnessed my first RAIN storm in the desert.
Broke my tooth.
Went to a student's birthday party....and danced.
Had parent/teacher interviews.
Praised my boys for their outstanding performance during fire drills.
Read a great book about a missionary couple.
Met really wonderful new friends.
Said goodbye to some lovely people I've met here.
Gave a bunch.
Preparing for Thanksgiving.
Saw some falcons in the desert.
Played with fire.

Giving Thanks

I have been so sick for the past week. Everyone's picking up this bug. Although I've been downing vitamins and such, it got the best of me. I lost my voice this week. I am helping with the praise team at church and feel awful about it. Headache, stuffiness, poppin' ears...I know that I'm not at my best, but it still sounds AWFUL!

I'm really grateful for the church here. I'm just left in awe. It's nothing like I have ever experienced. God has given me this amazing group of people to be around and to learn from and under. I just look at this whole worship team experience. In the past, if I've screwed up something, I would be heavily criticized with no guidiance (and I make mistakes all the time...as I'm sure others do as well). I don't know about you, but I feel really bad and one of two things happen: I feel so bad that have a hard time correcting what needs to be fixed OR I become obsessed with fixing the problem, that it just consumes me.

I was corrected today about something I was fully aware of, however, it was done such a loving way. I think this is the first time I don't feel miserable after a bad job. So, to that person, thank you. It's also a great lesson for me to remember in my teaching...

I'm finally starting to make friends at church. I'm quite sad though. One girl that I really like is leaving to return to Baghdad. I know she'll be back at times, but I wish I had more time to spend with her.

I'm also starting to feel comfortable around people in my Bible study. I've been the "entertainer" for the past couple of weeks. :)

It's been one full month of regular schedule at school. Regular schedule means busy, busy, busy. We are also working on some accreditation. I'm invovled in the process, but I don't really understand it. I have to make comments on things that go on at the school in terms of curriculum, etc. I just don't feel that I can make a fair judgement since I've only been at the school for two months. Oh, well. It is a very valuable learning experience for me.

In other news, after one month of 1st year Arabic class....I'm moving onto the 2nd year. Apparently, I'm ready for it! YAY!! حالأس

It's Starting to Feel Like Summer!!!

It's finally starting to feel like summer. The weather is beginning to become bareable. It probably reaches low to mid 90s now. Still humid. This morning we were late for work. Our bus was in/was stuck in traffic from an accident. I wasn't clear on the information. The driver had to change buses and we got picked up 40 minutes late. Some of us missed homeroom.

I remembered that one of my students had put her phone number in my phone. (The exact converstion was "Miss, I'm putting my number in my phone, so call me!! Me: What will we talk about? Boys? Student: "YEAH!")

I called her and told her we were late and ask if she would take care of things. She was so surprised that I called.

When I arrived at school, my students were so concerned because they thought WE were in the accident. They ran up hugging me. I really love my students. And at the end of the day, they all hugged me goodbye and told me they love me. Aw! I love them, too!

I've been teaching the Friday Church for 12-14 year olds. I'm teaching deep doctrines!! I'm so amazed that these kids actually KNOW their Bible!!! These kids quote it left and right to me!!! I don't think I've ever experienced anything like it in the States. Imagine a room full of 25 12-14 year old Bible quotin' kids!!!

So my schedule is starting to pan out. Ramadan is finally over. Things are beginning to become "normal." After teaching for 4 hours, I offer free tutoring on Sundays, Chinese language and culture club on Mondays, tutor for pay on Tuesdays and Thursdays and have meetings on Wednesdays.

I did get my drivers license, but I have done anything or gone anywhere...

Oh well. Maybe for December break.

AND....I voted today!!!!! My ballot was "lost" in the mail. It looks like I forgot to put the school's PO box number on the request form. I put the school name figuring it would get there...NO! It's been sitting at the post office for a week or two. Thanks to my friend, Ala'a, I was able to vote today. :)

Music Ministry Conference (Dubai)

I was able to attend a ministry conference at the Dubai Evangelical Community Church. I took a ride with some people from my church and had a great time!! I took a seminar on singing (it was a lovely reminder of all the things I learned in training) and a seminar on how to write worship songs. I've had some ideas, but didn't know how to put them down on paper. It was a great experience.

Ramadan is Finally Over!!!!

We are on our 9 day break for Eid-al-Fitr, which is the celebration of the end of Ramadan. I'm so happy for this for several reasons. First, we will finally be on a normal school schedule. Secondly, if I'm hungry at 3 PM, I can go to a restaurant and eat...not to mention drink water in public!!

Some friends from church and I went to the beach last night and had a little BBQ! We were "ambushed" by some Egyptian men, who would just not leave us alone. At first it wasn't a big deal. I'm used to the attention from being in Taiwan (ei locals wanting to take a million pictures with me because I'm American), but this was quite different. I need to remember this for next time.

Horsing Around

A friend from church took me to the Royal Stables. I want to take riding lessons, but they seem really expensive. What it all comes down to is the acquisition of vehicle. I'd have to walk about a mile to reach the horses as taxis are not allowed on the property.

I've been attendingEvangelical Community Church in Abu Dhabi. The church recently built a new building (first picture). Apparently, they have much favor with the local government. I was so surprised by the expository preaching done at this church and in the home group. It's amazing!! In Taiwan and America, where Christianity is acceptable, few preach the Word. However, in a restricted nation, the Word is preached properly.

There are tons of Western shops here including IKEA. I like this store, but my roommate and I need to wait until we get paid!! IKEA blowout! Getting a taxi in Abu Dhabi can be a bit difficult. Sometimes I wait 30 minutes for cab. When one finally comes, I have to fight off people who want to cut ahead of you. However, if you go to shopping centers, you can not hail a cab from the side of the road. You must go to the taxi cue and wait and wait and wait.

I'm thinking purchasing a used car might be a very good investment here. That and gas is cheaper than bottled water!

Emirates Palace

We went to see the Picasso exhibit at the Emirates Palace. One day, I would like to stay in this hotel. We ordered some chocolates which had real gold on them (and yes, you eat the gold). Apparently, it's good for the skin. Who knew. And yes, that is the sea in the fourth picture. It's blue, blue, blue water for miles and miles around. The best part is that I live 5-10 minute walk from the beach!!

Houston, We Have Landed

I arrived at 10pm last night. Never have I been treated so well as a woman before. The male airport staff escorted me to the front of the lines for my visa and eye scan. The men were made to wait while I got my stuff taken care of. I felt almost bad cutting the line of 50 men. Not! :)

I met my administration last night. They took us to our apartments to get settled in. Mine is located in the downtown area and I'm on the 3rd floor. My roommate is from England. Our place is very large and I even have my own bathroom!!

We stayed up far to late in a returning teacher's apartment. I met a woman from Spain and got to speak some Spanish with her last night.

We have lots of meetings and tours this week. Getting settled in.

I won't have internet access in my home for some time. Please be patient. No pictures yet. I must wait until I get my resident visa to do that. I will try to update from school if I can.

I have a feeling this is going to be a good place for me. Everyone seems so positive, encouraging and very supportive. Very different from Taiwan (in general). I can honestly say that I'm excited to be here. I want to make the most of the next two years.

Just to give you an idea of the weather: Last night it was 98 degrees at 10pm. Today will be around 115 degrees!!

35 Days to Go...

I'm beginning to get a little sad about leaving. God has blessed me with amazing Christian friends back home this summer!! I have been praying for them for 7 years!! I don't want to leave them. I love co-laboring with them, but I need to go. I need to learn a few things. I have about one more month left and I really want to make the most of my time left. I am already starting to miss them as I miss my girls in Taiwan.

Sigh. I pray that the next 2 years will go by quickly. :)

My Assignment

I recently learned I will be teaching 6th grade Humanities and English Language Arts. I'm really excited because I'll be teaching all about the places I've traveled to in the last several years!! I'm leaving on August 18th. It's going to be a great learning experience to prepare me for what I have vision for in the US: opening my own school!

Paperwork Completed!

Praise Jesus! To eliminate some of the stress, I just hired someone in the US to take care of the documents for me. It cost quite a bit of money because I had so many documents, but the fact is, I didn't have to do it.

There's no way that I would have the patience/time/etc to keep calling the States from Taiwan and finding out where to send things. That and FedEx is extremely far from where I live.

If you ever need documents authenticated in the US, call Brigitte. She made it so easy and it looks like within two weeks, she's all done.

"Red Tape" and Frustration

I FINALLY was able to get my work letter notarized in Kaohsiung. Praise God, a judge notarized it for me! My documents have been attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan and now have to be sent to the UAE Embassy in Taiwan.

Wait, there isn't one!!

So, I must send it to the closest embassy. I found 7 phone numbers for the embassy in Beijing...NONE of them work!

Call Manila. Won't do it. Call Singapore. Won't do it. Call Hong Kong. Won't do it, but they did give me a working number for Beijing.
